My Perfectly Imperfect Life

It’s Okay to Rest

It’s Okay to Rest

A few days ago, after a long day at work I came home and plopped on my couch! I was exhausted from life. Late nights blogging or editing my blog because the perfectionist in me feels like it’s not visually perfect yet, cooking cleaning, going to work and just living. Not to mention not sleeping a few nights that week from too much running through my mind. I was mentally and physically exhausted!

“My Boyfriend looked at me and said you don’t have to do anything tonight I will grab us some food go rest!” he proceeded to say that my anxiety and mood sometimes could be a result of my reluctance to just rest sometimes.

My response ” Rest is good but too much rest can cause person to become stagnant.” In my head resting meant doing nothing all day to much of that means more to do down the line. “There is too much I want to accomplish, and rest won’t get me there”.

We currently live in a time that productivity and hustle is celebrated, and we disregard that rest is a crucial component to living a healthy life. Everyone is working doing a thousand things and if we don’t do the same, we will definitely be left behind. I know I feel this way more often than not.

After a lot of debating, I finally listened showered and got some rest. When I say the next day, I felt so good it was what I needed, I surely thanked my partner the next morning for convincing me to just rest.

Over the last week or so I have thought about and read about the word Rest and what it truly means. The truth is the word rest means something different to everyone.

“rest” can be defined as a noun: a rest is a refreshing quiet, ease or inactivity after exertion. Or as a verb: to rest is to refresh oneself or to relieve weariness.

I am learning that “Rest” can actually be categorized when it comes to our well-being.

Rest Categories

Physical Rest– this type of rest helps relieve muscle tension, fatigue and simply makes us feel better. example-Napping, sitting in relaxing position, or lying down, or taking a hot bath.

Mental Rest– Give your mind a break from constant activity and mental stimulation. Allow your mind to relax and recharge. this will help reduce mental fatigue, boost focus and creativity. example-Meditation, break every 2 hours during the workday.

Emotional Rest-Take a break from emotional stressors. This can be achieved through journaling, spending time outdoors in nature, joyful activities alone or with loved ones even something as simple as calling a friend.

Sensory Rest– can be achieved by Digital Detox and or sitting in silence- Sensory rest helps calm the nervous system, reduce sensory overload, and promote a sense of calm and well-being.

Social Rest -Have some alone time-Alone time is definitely crucial for rest we all need those moments alone to do what we love and pour energy back into ourselves.

Spiritual Rest -Pray, scripture, daily devotionals, serve -sometimes when we are overwhelmed with all things spending time with your higher power is all you need.

In conclusion, rest is not a luxury but a necessity for our health and well-being in this busy world. There are so many benefits to prioritizing “rest” which also includes quality sleep. The key is to find balance that works for you.

Embrace the opportunity to find a balance between productivity and self-care.

What does rest mean to you? How do you prioritize rest in your life? Leave your answer in the comments.

My top two right now are Mental Rest and Sensory Rest!
