How I Stopped Overpacking (Kinda)”

Overpacking is definitely my thing. But with these crazy luggage fees these days! I had to learn to pack smarter.

I’ve been known to bring “options” for every possible vibe and still somehow feel like I had nothing to wear once I got there. Can you relate?

Now, before any trip, I create a packing moodboard—and honestly, it’s been a total game changer. It keeps me organized, helps me stay on theme, and cuts down on the unnecessary “just in case” pieces that never leave my suitcase.

Why a Packing Moodboard Works

Creating a visual layout of your planned outfits helps you:

  • See what pieces work together
  • Avoid duplicate looks
  • Stick to your planned itinerary
  • Build intentional outfits instead of stuffing a suitcase “just in case”

🖼️ Here’s What It Looks Like:

I break my packing down by occasion. For example:

  • Friday Night Girls’ Night: option 1 & 2
  • Champagne Party: casual glam vs elevated chic
  • Mother’s Day Brunch: playful, polished pieces
  • Extras: A chill daytime fit and something neutral I can rewear

Tips for Creating Your Own:

  1. Start with your itinerary. Knowing what you’ll be doing helps narrow down what you actually need.
  2. Choose a base color palette. Neutrals + 1–2 pops of color work best.
  3. Layer by vibe. Night out, daytime cute, lounging, brunch, etc.
  4. Mix and match pieces. Aim for versatility. That blazer should work with jeans and your dress.
  5. Lay it out visually. Use a Canva template or snap flatlays of your outfits and label them by day/event.

Packing Mindfully

This isn’t just about saving space—it’s about feeling prepared, polished, and intentional with your style. No more stressing over what to wear or unpacking clothes you never touched.

Would You Try This?

If you’re tired of overpacking or just want a cuter way to prep your suitcase, try a packing moodboard before your next trip.

Bonus Tip: Use Vacuum Packing Bags Once your packing board is done and outfits are planned, vacuum packing bags can help you save even more space—especially if you’re packing bulkier items like jeans, dresses, or jackets. They shrink your clothes down to size and keep everything neatly compressed in your suitcase. Plus, if you’re like me and still slightly overpack, this hack helps you fit more without the extra baggage fees. I use them in my carry on and personal Item Not paying extra fees anymore!
